Glenn - The Census Expert

Glenn is our resident Census expert. After ten years working at the ABS, Glenn's deep knowledge of the Census has been a crucial input in the development of our community profiles. These tools help everyday people uncover the rich and important stories about our communities that are often hidden deep in the Census data. Glenn is also our most prolific blogger - if you're reading this, you've just finished reading one of his blogs. Take a quick look at the front page of our blog and you'll no doubt find more of Glenn's latest work. As a client manager, Glenn travels the country giving sought-after briefings to councils and communities (these are also great opportunities for Glenn to tend to his rankings in Geolocation games such as Munzee and Geocaching).

Cue: crammed primary schools with no room to put another double-storey demoutable and log-jammed high schools in the inner city and lower north shore of Sydney.

The most interesting thing about this data is that the age cohort that started the move into the high density accommodation don’t appear to be moving out of it when the traditional lifecycle model says they will. Projecting that forward 20 years is a very interesting prospect. Im imagining a whole lot of 52 year olds in apartments!
Obvious follow-up questions for a PhD thesis:
    * Is it actually the same people who stay in units or is there churn in who from the cohort is in it?
    * Many of the units are in areas with a mix of housing. The people who do move out when they have kids may just be moving into the terrace next door and therefore still need schools etc
    * Are there particular characteristics to those who stay in vs those who move on?

  3. From business statistics, it looks like people are doing a lot of moving anyway no matter whether to high or low density locations. We’ve seen a big spike of people who are leaving their packing boxes out on the road for the garbage man! But for the older generation I suppose is preference on whether they want to be surrounded by people or not…
