Where do overseas migrants go in Australia?

Glenn is our resident Census expert. After ten years working at the ABS, Glenn's deep knowledge of the Census has been a crucial input in the development of our community profiles. These tools help everyday people uncover the rich and important stories about our communities that are often hidden deep in the Census data. Glenn is also our most prolific blogger - if you're reading this, you've just finished reading one of his blogs. Take a quick look at the front page of our blog and you'll no doubt find more of Glenn's latest work. As a client manager, Glenn travels the country giving sought-after briefings to councils and communities (these are also great opportunities for Glenn to tend to his rankings in Geolocation games such as Munzee and Geocaching).

Where does Adelaide feature? I see nothing meaningful from SA?

Stan, check out the section ‘The highest percentage of net overseas migrants, by LGA’. There’s a few SA LGAs in there.

Are there data on which countries immigrants originate from? Are some countries’ residents more inclined to land in certain states?

I am interested to find out if the migration figures for Net Internal, Natural and Overseas migration are available each year for local governments with the interactive map (as per: Series: Drivers of population change #2 – Overseas migration June 2019).

    • Hi Andrea,

They are available each year from ABS in publication 3218.0 – Regional Population Growth – they have been calculating these components for the last 2 years and intend to continue to do so in the future. I’m not aware of them being in an interactive map from the ABS – we put them on the blog as you can see, and will probably do so again each year when they are released, as they tell an interesting story. For our local government clients, we may add them in the future to the Population Estimates page on profile.id, but at the moment this only includes total population.
