  1. Hi Glenn
thanks for the article – I work for LGNSW. A question that I am often asked by councils and not directly related to blog above is – How do they identify Home Based businesses in the LGA? from demographic or ABR data if you have any tips or advice on how to identify home based businesses Id love to hear about that .

    • Hi Liz,

Home based businesses can be difficult to capture. We do have a proxy for it in our social atlas. Look in the map selector under “Transport”, and there is “Worked at home in a home based business”. Technically this isn’t 100% accurate. But it does use the Census data for “Worked at home on Census day” along with being an “Owner manager of an incorporated or unincorporated enterprise”. So effectively we are counting business owners who worked at home on Census day. A good proxy for home based businesses but not exactly the same (as they may run a non-home based business but have worked at home on that day). Nevertheless it does show a strong spatial pattern. Farming areas show the highest concentrations, and high socio-economic areas are also high. Australia-wide, 2.8% of the population worked at home in a home based business in 2016.
