Gazing into the Census crystal ball – What will the results reveal about Australia?

Glenn - The Census Expert

Glenn is our resident Census expert. After ten years working at the ABS, Glenn's deep knowledge of the Census has been a crucial input in the development of our community profiles. These tools help everyday people uncover the rich and important stories about our communities that are often hidden deep in the Census data. Glenn is also our most prolific blogger - if you're reading this, you've just finished reading one of his blogs. Take a quick look at the front page of our blog and you'll no doubt find more of Glenn's latest work. As a client manager, Glenn travels the country giving sought-after briefings to councils and communities (these are also great opportunities for Glenn to tend to his rankings in Geolocation games such as Munzee and Geocaching).

    Hi Glenn,

Great article, just a quick observation. People who select no religion do not belong as a subset of the category of religion, in the same way that people who do not support an AFL team do not belong to as a subset of AFL supporters.

    Cheers

Always great work Glenn. Look forward with anticipation for the latest results to be published.

I wonder how many new localities have been added since the last census? Very glad to see my WA location, City of Vincent now signed up.

Only a few more months until we can test some of these predictions.

.id is considerably more useful to me than any supplied by the ABS (though they are obviously the origin of most of your data). Your data is open, easy to find and use, packaged in useful products and timely.

    • Thanks, we try to be as open and accessible as possible! The ABS do a great job of collecting the data, but sometimes presenting it isn’t their strong suit. Looking forward to the new Census data!

And what about Buddhism numbers in the Census?

    • Good question – Buddhism is a little harder to predict – it’s linked to Chinese and SE Asian migration, but a large proportion of chinese are also “No Religion”, so it doesn’t have as big an impact as migration from Islamic or Hindu countries. In 2011, Buddhists made up 2.5% of the population, larger than Islam or Hinduism and I’d expect that to increase to maybe 2.8%, still slightly larger than both.

[…] Census watchers, meanwhile, predict that despite the growth in the number of Australians nominating Islam as their religion (from 2.2 per cent to 2.6 per cent of the population), Hinduism will overtake it (2.7 per cent). […]
