Census Australia 2011 – A quality result?

Glenn - The Census Expert

Glenn is our resident Census expert. After ten years working at the ABS, Glenn's deep knowledge of the Census has been a crucial input in the development of our community profiles. These tools help everyday people uncover the rich and important stories about our communities that are often hidden deep in the Census data. Glenn is also our most prolific blogger - if you're reading this, you've just finished reading one of his blogs. Take a quick look at the front page of our blog and you'll no doubt find more of Glenn's latest work. As a client manager, Glenn travels the country giving sought-after briefings to councils and communities (these are also great opportunities for Glenn to tend to his rankings in Geolocation games such as Munzee and Geocaching).

Glenn – has the ABS published the % for eCensus completion?

Sometimes the census collector’s inability to make contact was entirely their own fault. Ours kept leaving notes stating they would be back on day/time – every time nominating a day/time when everyone was at work or school – but never, ever filling out the contact details so they could be told this. There were plenty of times we were there (given I work part-time and other half is a shift-worker) but s/he didn’t manage to GUESS any of them and clearly preferred to waste his or her time. We mailed it in.

    • Thanks for your input Kate. Collectors are instructed to come back at different times of day, but naturally when you’re employing 30,000 people, the quality of the work and people’s ability and willingness to stick to procedures varies across the group. Fortunately the ABS had the mailback and eCensus options available which made this less of an issue than previous Censuses.
