Why spatial analysis matters – the example of Western Australia

Simone - Myth Buster

Simone has a rich background in human geography, demography and urban planning – a background that was useful in her previous roles in the Commonwealth and State Governments, and now as part of the forecast team at .id. From the Queensland coast to the southern suburbs of Perth, Simone produces population and dwelling forecasts that help local governments make informed decisions about future service and planning needs. She is a regular contributor to .id’s blog and has spoken at several conferences on how our cities and regions are changing. She is a big advocate of evidence-based planning and how Census and other data can inform this. Outside of work Simone is a keen traveller and photographer – interests that tie in well with her professional life and help her to understand “place”.

    Just two important correction.

These are not recorded figures, but estimates based on projections from the 2006 census.

SA2s in WA has finer detail for metropolitan regions, but covers bigger areas for many non-urban areas.

Unfortunately WA is one of the few States that does not provide population estimates and forecasts according to local parameters. So ABS will continue to be the only source for such ready to use information.

    Hi Shaun,

Thanks for your comment – yes it’s true that SA2s have better resolution in the metro areas than rural – this seems to be the case across Australia. Nevertheless I still think it will be interesting to see what the new geography throws up.

Re WA population forecasts – my understanding is that the WA State government forecasts have not been updated using the 2006 Census as a basis. I’m aware that the ABS produced a consultancy for the Dept of Health and Ageing back in 2007 or 2008 that covers each Australian state with basic age and sex forecasts. .id also has many LGA clients in WA for whom we have produced detailed suburb-based population forecasts, and these are made readily available on our website
